VE Day Celebration Garden by Martyn Wilson

Garden Name: VE Day Celebration Garden

This special feature garden is open to the public and celebrates the 75th anniversary of VE Day which is being celebrated on the weekend of the RHS Malvern Spring Festival. The garden is a marriage of formal British and Dutch styles and has been inspired by the Airborne Invasion of Arnhem and the bravery and sacrifice of the troops who parachuted, but also of the people of the Netherlands. The garden will be a celebration of spring colour and bulbs, a poignant reference to the Honger Winter where the Dutch people survived starvation by eating Tulip bulbs. Martyn is collaborating with Dutch growers and suppliers including Royal Delft where magnificent porcelain vases will feature. A tulip entitled Liberation commissioned by the The Netherlands Embassy in London will also feature on the garden. Children of NATO corps stationed in nearby Gloucester will be invited for a symbolic planting of bulbs in the spirit of peace and reconciliation and looking to the future. Pleached trees and hedge frame the garden with a central pathway of Dutch style paviours passing four plinths mounted with Royal Delft Vases then crossing between to water features symbolic of the River Rhine and the canals of the Netherlands.
