Karen Tatlow - The Moments that Matter

Garden Name: The Moments that Matter

'The Moments that Matter' garden, in support of St Giles Hospice, celebrates the simple but important moments that happen when family, friends and communities come together and memories are made. Designed as a real-life garden that will be relocated back at the hospice in Whittington, Staffordshire after the show, it provides an outdoor space where families, or the hospice community, can spend time 'making memories', as well as being an oasis of calm if needed. With wheelchair access and raised beds to make the planting more accessible, there is room to take a patient bed into the garden and still be able to accommodate family, friends and even pets! Very much a local community project, hospice supporters have come together to make the garden happen - metal sunflowers, sold to raise funds, create a poignant art installation at the heart of the garden - the sunflower being the emblem of the hospice movement.

Designer: Karen Tatlow

Karen has always been creative...through dance in her earlier years and later studying architecture and interior design. She is also a professional make-up artist trained by Ruby Hammer from the TV series 10 Years Younger. This led her into the corporate world where she held national roles for some of the giants like Estee Lauder, Clarins and LVMH, devising creative business solutions. Throughout this time she had always used her creative background to design gardens as an amateur, until finally taking the plunge to follow her passion, qualifying with distinction in Garden Design and setting up her business. Karen now has her own design studio at New Fulfen Cottage, nestled in the Old English Rose Garden, where she creates with her two dogs Rolo and Mars by her feet. Previously Karen worked with a design colleague, Katherine Hathaway, to deliver the ‘Fascinating Haunts’ beautiful border at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in 2018. Karen and Katherine met when they studied together at the Pickard School of Garden Design in Bristol and for their first time out were extraordinarily successful winning a Platinum. They then went on to create ‘The Habit of Living’ show garden in support of Diabetes UK at RHS Malvern in 2019. This too proved to be a fruitful experience, not only winning a Silver-Gilt, but also being awarded Best Construction in show and then topping it all with People’s Choice. ‘The Moments That Matter’ garden in support of St Giles Hospice is the first show garden Karen has attempted on her own.
