Jane Scott Moncrieff - The Violette Szabó Garden

Garden Name: The Violette Szabó Garden

Created to raise awareness of SOE (Special Operations Executive) agents' incredible bravery in Nazi-occupied Europe in WWII, this garden has a timber framed 'farmhouse', as seen all over Normandy, as a backdrop. The largest element in the garden, the house is created by Mark Eveleigh, a veteran of many Malvern shows, using reclaimed materials combined with ancient craft techniques. The planting is feminine in colour, with a palette of deep and lighter pinks, creams, ambers, coppers and some deep purple elements. There is an orchard and wildflower meadow along one side, with gnarled apple trees, to give a rural impression. Expect a few vegetables growing, as would have been the case in wartime Europe. The garden, farmhouse and orchard all have a slight air of decrepitude – intended to invoke the feeling of going back in time.

Designer: Jane Scott Moncrieff

Jane studied at the Capel Manor College Regents’ Park campus from January 2016 – December 2018 with tutors Sophie Guinness and Melinda Hilliard.  In July 2018 Jane created a small show garden for The Gurkha Welfare Trust at The Sandringham Flower Show for which she was awarded a Gold Medal and Best in Show by judges Chris Beardshaw and Alan Mason.   In June 2019 Jane created a Border at BBC Gardeners’ World Live for The Gurkha Welfare Trust which was awarded a Gold Medal.  Last year Jane worked on 9 projects in north Norfolk - all the gardens were designed for ease of maintenance and plant suitability in an area which can experience weather extremes.  Jane’s planting style is loose and airy, with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly perennials.
