Horatio's Garden

Official 2020 Charity

We are delighted to partner with Horatio's Garden, a national charity creating and nurturing beautiful gardens in NHS spinal injury centres to support everyone affected by spinal injury.

The charity is named after Horatio Chapple, a volunteer who had the original idea of creating a garden away from the wards for patients and their families.

Spinal cord injuries are traumatic, life-changing events. Patients often have little or no access to the outside world during their hospital stay. However, research shows that being in contact with a natural environment contributes to an improved sense of wellbeing, which can have a positive impact on patient rehabilitation.

Coronavirus has meant that all of us have had to embrace a ‘new normal’, including national charity Horatio’s Garden who support patients, families and NHS staff affected by spinal injury.

Ordinarily, each of the charity’s gardens are nurtured by a dedicated team of volunteers, who are led by a Head Gardener. Currently, only the Head Gardeners can visit to maintain the gardens in order to protect vulnerable patients. However, each Horatio’s Garden continues to be warmly embraced by patients and NHS staff, who are seeking solace in these beautiful sanctuaries now more than ever.

Since the Coronavirus crisis, patients and NHS staff have loved tending to the gardens together and many people have joined in with the charity’s ‘Zoom Poetry Workshops’ and ‘Virtual Arty Afternoons’ too. The Horatio’s Garden Grow to Give campaign is also helping to ensure that patients, NHS staff, volunteers and local communities continue to feel the benefits of nature.

Horatio’s Garden have always supported people’s physical and mental health with the power of gardening and creativity. Whilst that support may look a little different this year, Horatio’s Garden will always be there for everyone affected by spinal injury.
